When Do You Need
Commercial lighting in new construction needs to be planned before walls close and ceilings go in — not after. Fixture placement, circuit layout, and conduit routing are all decisions made during rough-in, and changing them after the fact means opening walls and ceilings that have already been finished. We coordinate directly with your general contractor and architect from rough-in through trim-out, install conduit and wire on the GC's schedule, and make sure every circuit is ready for inspection when the inspector shows up. One fewer subcontractor your GC has to chase.
Different commercial spaces have different footcandle requirements — a warehouse picking line, a dental operatory, and a retail floor all need different light levels and distributions to function correctly. Lighting that falls short of those requirements causes eye strain and mistakes, and in some work environments it creates OSHA compliance exposure. We assess the footcandle requirements for your specific space and occupancy type, design a fixture layout that delivers even, appropriate light levels throughout, and install it to code. You get a space that is properly lit for the work being done in it — not just technically illuminated.
A remodel is the right time to address lighting that has never worked well — uneven distribution, fixtures that have outlived their useful life, or a layout designed for a space that is being used differently now. It is also the most practical time to add dimming, occupancy sensors, and daylight harvesting controls, because the walls and ceilings are already open. We handle fixture selection guidance, circuit modifications, controls installation, and final switch programming — so the finished space has lighting that works with how it is actually used, not just lighting that technically turns on.

LED fixtures typically use 60 to 75 percent less energy than the fluorescent or HID systems they replace. For a business running lights 10 to 12 hours a day, the payback period on most commercial LED retrofits is two to four years. After that, the savings are ongoing. We retrofit controls into existing systems and also specify them for new installations. For large commercial spaces, smart lighting controls can cut lighting energy use by an additional 30 to 50 percent beyond just switching to LED.
Minnesota follows the National Electrical Code with state amendments, and lighting requirements have changed significantly over the past decade. Emergency egress lighting, exit signs, and lighting in certain commercial occupancy types have specific requirements.
